Ag Appropriations Bill Marked Up by House Subcommittee

To Members of the NASULGC System:

The House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies marked-up its F.Y. 2007 spending bill this week. Overall discretionary spending in the bill was $18.4 billion, a decrease of $96 million below last year's enacted level and $564 million over the President's Budget Request. Despite the fact that this was another tight budgetary year, The BRT is pleased to report that the Land-Grant System's advocacy efforts have borne significant fruit with respect to key CSREES programs:

  Line Item House Mark Increase*
  Hatch $183,275,000 $6,306,000
  McIntire-Stennis 22,668,000 660,000

In addition to the successes described above, the House subcommittee did not agree to the proposals in the President's F.Y. 2007 Budget Request to: (1) eliminate funding for the Animal Health & Disease Program; (2) change the formulas for distribution of Hatch and McIntire-Stennis monies; or (3) move the Section 406 integrated activities programs to the NRI for administration.
