Cornerstone Report from Washington

Vol. 9, No. 3 Feb. 11, 2011

House Continuing Resolution Details Made Public

This evening the House Appropriations Committee made public the details of its proposed cuts to federal departments, agencies, and programs. A summary of that portion of the CR under the jurisdiction of the Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee has been posted on the land-grant.org web site at:

www.land-grant.org/docs/FY2011/02-11-11CRAg.pdf

As you can see from that summary the agencies under the auspices of the USDA Under Secretary for Research, Education, and Economics, all suffered major cuts compared to FY 2010: (1) Agriculture Research Service was cut by $185M; (2) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) was cut by $217M; (3) Economic Research Service was cut by $3M; and (4) National Agricultural Statistics Service was cut by $10M.

We have gone through the text of the bill and compiled the following table for NIFA.

The CR will be debated on the House floor next week under an open rule, and further reductions may occur. We are monitoring this EXTREMELY fluid situation very closely and will be issuing a Call to Action early next week.
